Twitter following limits

As we all know, until you get to 2000 followers on Twitter you are limited to only being able to follow 2000 people yourself. Jane from Competition Grape Vine has written an excellent post on the subject here with links to 2 very useful tools for when you are following too many people to cull some of them so that you can follow more.

Both are very useful and her tip about putting friends onto lists instead of following them is an excellent one, the only friends you need to follow really are those who you DM with about private information you don’t want the whole world to know. Unfortunately you will notice that some people don’t see it that way and can get quite stroppy if you suddenly stop following them, but ask yourself, have they spoken to you as a friend recently and does it really matter to you when they get so upset over something so trivial, I have to say, I don’t keep a note of how many people follow me, I really don’t care, what matters to me are those friends I have a laugh with and talk to and that doesn’t change as you will see each and every @ message to you if you’re following the person or listing them, or not (as you will know from the spam posts you see every so often!lol)

Another thing to do is to go through your list of who you are following manually yourself. I started this a couple of weeks ago just opening the list whenever I had half an hour and going through from the bottom (oldest follows) and now I’m about halfway and have removed around 500  from it (I have followed more at the same time but still have a nice comfort zone now) and moving friends onto a list has helped reduce it a bit more too. A lot of those I removed are accounts that still tweet often, don’t spam too much, not too many links nothing really bad so they wouldn’t get spotted by the tools that Jane suggests and we have all found really useful but are still ones I don’t interact with any more. So going forward, I’m going to keep on using those tools but once/twice a year, I’m going to have a good long look at who I’m actually following and see if I really need to be still following them!
